During the many years most of us have dieted, we have probably seen every conceivable type of diet and nutrition advice. "Food combining" where protein and vegetables can be eaten together, but carbs must be taken separately, and fruit is eaten alone. A number of high protein and fat diets restrict that vegetables and carbs during the first phase of the diet, introducing vegetables and carbs when the initial phase is over. Fad diets of the "cabbage soup" variety, where the hopeful dieter eats one or two foods consistently for a period of time. "Fasting" diets, "liquid-only diets", grapefruit diets, and so on.
The truth is, all types of diets can work at first. There are many ways to lose weight and a lot of the abovementioned diet them will work for a short time. But truthfully, the answer is that old adage we hate to hear but which keeps cropping up time and time again. Eating less and exercising more is the only way to effectively get weight off, get trim and fit after forty, and the only way to keep the weight off and the body fit in later life.
Eating 3 to 5 meals a day, paying strict attention to serving size, and avoiding high-calorie sweets most times (not all the time) is an effective way to start cutting down.
