As we age, the ability of our bodies to burn fat decreases. It's a sad fact, but to get fit and trim in middle age and into the golden years, you must eat less and move more.
There are so many ways to get moving. Walking to a store instead of driving, or taking the bus and getting off several stops prior to your destination, then walking the rest of the way. Every little bit helps. You need not be an athlete to think of the myriad ways to get moving. Ideally using a treadmill at a gym or at home is easy and mindless exercise. Watching TV while on a treadmill is great, but many of us can't afford the equipment or don't have room for it. So we are stuck with good 'ol walking. Winter weather can block our best efforts to walk outside, but remember that hint about walking up and down stairs inside your home for ten minutes, three times a day if you can. The first thing in the morning you might do, before breakfast, is to do that 10-minute stair routine. This is known as "cardio fasting" exercise since your stomach is empty and burns fat way more effectively than exercise on a full stomach.
There is no effective solution to the problem of eating less in order not to get obese as we grow older. In order to be fit and lose weight in middle age, empty calories have got to go. Sugar is the enemy. Less is more, and so on.
Eating smaller meals 4 to 6 times a day is the best way to go. Have something every four hours or so to keep that metabolism boosted throughout the day. We'll talk more about what to eat, what combinations of food are best, and what to diligently avoid most of the time in a later message.
