Fitness Past 40 - What to Eat?

During the many years most of us have dieted, we have probably seen every conceivable type of diet and nutrition advice. "Food combining" where protein and vegetables can be eaten together, but carbs must be taken separately, and fruit is eaten alone. A number of high protein and fat diets restrict that vegetables and carbs during the first phase of the diet, introducing vegetables and carbs when the initial phase is over. Fad diets of the "cabbage soup" variety, where the hopeful dieter eats one or two foods consistently for a period of time. "Fasting" diets, "liquid-only diets", grapefruit diets, and so on.

The truth is, all types of diets can work at first. There are many ways to lose weight and a lot of the abovementioned diet them will work for a short time. But truthfully, the answer is that old adage we hate to hear but which keeps cropping up time and time again. Eating less and exercising more is the only way to effectively get weight off, get trim and fit after forty, and the only way to keep the weight off and the body fit in later life.

Eating 3 to 5 meals a day, paying strict attention to serving size, and avoiding high-calorie sweets most times (not all the time) is an effective way to start cutting down. You don't need a food scale or anything fancy to judge the portion size which is correct for you. There is an easier way, using the palm of your hand as a measuring device. Want to know more about how to judge portion size and how to regulate the amount of protein and carbs you eat in order to effectively lose weight and build muscle for middle-age weight loss and fitness? Metabolism After Forty or Fifty - the Bad News

As we age, the ability of our bodies to burn fat decreases. It's a sad fact, but to get fit and trim in middle age and into the golden years, you must eat less and move more.

There are so many ways to get moving. Walking to a store instead of driving, or taking the bus and getting off several stops prior to your destination, then walking the rest of the way. Every little bit helps. You need not be an athlete to think of the myriad ways to get moving. Ideally using a treadmill at a gym or at home is easy and mindless exercise. Watching TV while on a treadmill is great, but many of us can't afford the equipment or don't have room for it. So we are stuck with good 'ol walking. Winter weather can block our best efforts to walk outside, but remember that hint about walking up and down stairs inside your home for ten minutes, three times a day if you can. The first thing in the morning you might do, before breakfast, is to do that 10-minute stair routine. This is known as "cardio fasting" exercise since your stomach is empty and burns fat way more effectively than exercise on a full stomach.

There is no effective solution to the problem of eating less in order not to get obese as we grow older. In order to be fit and lose weight in middle age, empty calories have got to go. Sugar is the enemy. Less is more, and so on.

Eating smaller meals 4 to 6 times a day is the best way to go. Have something every four hours or so to keep that metabolism boosted throughout the day. We'll talk more about what to eat, what combinations of food are best, and what to diligently avoid most of the time in a later message.

Diet Drugs and Other Pills

All of us who are lifelong dieters have tried at least one of the so-called "weight-loss pills" which promise to burn fat, resculpt the obese body, cut down appetite, and so on. Some years ago, serious prescription diet pills were used by those with chronic weight problems with great success. They were not illegal to use, and most doctors would prescribe this "speed" medication. The terrible down side to them was that they increased the heart rate, caused irritability and hyperactivity; when they were stopped, inevitably the weight gained was far more than the weight lost.

Most recently, overweight people who are desperate to get thin and fit again can obtain pills with an ingredient now known as "phen" slightly safer than the old style pills, but with serious side effects.

Let me tell you from my experience and that of many of my friends: expensive pills hyped by ads showing "before" and "after" fatties don't work. If you must try pills, you can safely order a product called Ditex online which is cheap and merely a fiber pill which makes you feel full. You can determine just how many to take and when during the day, depending upon when you feel most hungry. This product is also dispensed by "diet doctors" to people who can't take the risky stuff. Your cost if you order them yourself might be $15 for 30 days; doctors will charge you $75 and give you a month's supply!

Other than that, in your quest for fitness, please remember to take a multi-vitamin pill each day. For the over 40, 50, and 60 crowd, calcium tablets are extremely important. A woman of 50 or 60+ should take at least 1200 mg. of calcium daily, especially if she is small-boned, postmenopausal and takes no hormones.

Using Role Models to Get Fit After Forty

If you've decided to change your unhealthy lifestyle, get fit and lose weight, one of the first steps you should take is locating people in your life who can act as role models. You know......the ones you admire for their bodies, their personalities, and their focus on good health and nutrition.

That man or woman you work with may be able to give you some very pertinent information on getting fit at 40, 50, 60 years or more. Ask them to tell you what their diets consist of.......if in fact they are people who have recently lost some weight, ask them how they did it. Most people are happy to share their life experience with getting fit again after 40 and you can benefit from this.

If you're a computer buff, it's possible to get all this "mentoring" or "role model" information, much of it for free, online. Try searching for any of the pertinent items relating to fitness after 40. Words like "role models for fitness after 40", "healthy senior lifestyles" and dozens of others will bring you information which can start you on the road to fitness and good health.

Slow Down the Aging Process

Most of us who are in our forties, fifties and even 70's give some thought to the aging process. As each new wrinkle or line appears, or we become unable to perform tasks that require more strength and stamina than we have now, we can become depressed over what life has dealt us.

There are numerous ways to slow down the aging process and feel fit again after forty. While exercise, good nutrition, and a youthful outlook are not necessarily the Fountain of Youth, they come as close as possible to that magic elixir. Plastic surgery or liposuction is not the answer. Risky and expensive at best, plastic surgery only temporarily "fixes" the outside appearance, and makes those who undergo procedures LOOK as if they might be fit and healthy.

Regular exercise will result in weight loss, greater flexiblity of the joints and muscles, circulation benefits, and greater cardiovascular stamina. Good nutrition can keep weight down, help in digestive disorders, and make the skin appear smoother and more supple.

Sick and Fat or Healthy and Fit

Let's zero in on the specific things that can go wrong with your health in middle age, say 40 to 60 or more, as a result of not being fit.

Extra weight is a common factor in the onset of diabetes.

Lack of exercise and obesity contribute to heart disease and high blood pressure.

Digestive problems such as acid reflux and hiatal hernias are much worse in the obese person.

Knee pain and joint problems often develop because of extra weight, even in people in their forties.

And the list goes on and on.

How can we change sick and fat to healthy and fit? We all know the rules. Eat less, exercise more, bla, bla, bla. But there are so many excuses we can make to avoid the "exercise drudgery". Not enough time, embarassment at being seen at the gym, an overwhelming feeling that it's too late to get healthy and fit.

The process of going from sick and fat to healthy and fit should be done in small steps. Plunging in to exercising every single day, or cutting fats and sweets until you feel deprived will just lead to feeling overwhelmed and defeated. Try cutting out desserts except for just one on a Sunday. Try having starchy food only once a day.

We will explore different ways to get started on a fitness program. For a free look at such a program, go to http://aquarius43.bevopub.hop.clickbank.net/

40 Plus Fitness

There are many advantages to being fit in middle age. Looking youthful, feeling youthful, and more stamina to enjoy life are just a few. As we know, cardio exercise (that which gets your heart pumping) can be done in three 10 minute intervals per day (i.e., stair climbing) and your fitness results will be apparent in about six weeks.

Cardio fitness will lead to better health and stamina, but what about looking good in our "40 + Fitness" quest? With the over-40 crowd, this doesn't necessarily mean plastic surgery. Not at all. A program for better health and stamina which includes attention to nutrition, exercise of several different varieties, focusing on role models who have succeeded in becoming fit after 40, and a commitment to yourself to gain better health and stamina will result in transforming your out-of-shape body to a fit and healthy one.
